General Range & Gun Handling Rules

In compliance with the State of Ohio ODNR, these Safety Rules have been establishedto ensure the health and safety of those individuals who use or frequent this facility and the community at large.These safety rules supersede and replace any previously adopted safety plan.
- Eye and ear protection is mandatory on all Weslaco ranges for shooters and spectators.
- Always treat every firearm as if it was loaded.
-Always keep your action open, and gun unloaded, until you are ready to shoot.
- Always point the muzzle of any firearm in a safe direction and/or downrange.
- Keep your finger off the trigger, and outside the trigger guard, until you are ready to fire, or until the commence fire command is given by the Range Safety Officer.
-Before shooting at any Weslaco range understand the safe operation of your firearm
- Make sure your firearm and ammunition are compatible.
- Make sure your firearm is safe to operate
- No fully automatic firearms are permitted on any Weslaco range or on club grounds.
- The use of alcohol and drugs are strictly prohibited on all Weslaco ranges.
- If a chambered round or shell does not fire when you depress the trigger, keep the firearm pointed down range, take your finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard, and wait for 30 seconds. If the ammunition still hasn’t ignited, remove it from the firearm and dispose of safely.
- No loaded firearms are permitted inside any and all buildings on Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club property.
- Never enter Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club, Inc. with a loaded firearm, other than a CCW firearm or “Open Carry” personal defense firearm that must remain holstered. Uncased firearms must have actions open and be unloaded and safe.
- A member is responsible for his/her guest. Both members and guests are required to act in an orderly manner, always following Weslaco general and range specific rules.
- Do not handle firearms while others are downrange. Firearms are to be made safe while others are downrange.
- Unload, open action, remove magazine, and or ground/bench all firearms during a cease fire.- Shoot only at authorized targets. See the specific range rules (see section 2) for more information on range specific authorized targets. No ground level targets are permitted on any Weslaco range.
- For safety reasons, no home built targets or stands are allowed on any Weslaco range. Modification of any Weslaco targets or target stands are prohibited.
- Check with a Range Safety Officer, Club Officer or Board Member for clarification of these or any other club rules if needed.- Range hours of operation: Monday through Saturday, 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M.. Sunday 12:00 Noon to 10:00 P.M.. Check the club newsletter for any holiday or special event range closures.
- Club members and their guest must sign the club log books inside the main clubhouse before using any range. Please remember to sign out when leaving the club grounds.
- No pets are permitted on any Weslaco ranges during shooting activities.
- You are responsible to issue a cease fire command if you believe an unsafe condition exists or a safety infraction has occurred.
- All shooters on all Weslaco ranges must follow the commands of the Range Safety Officer, scorekeeper, trapper, Weslaco Board of Directors member, or Club Officer present.- Know your target and what is beyond your target.
- Youths must be properly supervised by a parent or guardian at all times while on Weslaco property.
- Medical Certification: Members and their guests certify that they have no medical or physical conditions that could compromise their safety and the safety of others in any activities at Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club facility. Members and their guests must have adequate insurance to cover any injury or damage they may cause or suffer, or else agree to personally bear the costs of such injury or damage.
- The lead in our ammunition is dangerous to your health. Properly wash your hands before eating or using the restroom. It is strongly suggested that women that are pregnant refrain from using the firearm ranges due to lead exposure.- Please help keep our ranges and club clean. Pick up after yourself.
- If a prescription medication impairs you enough to be unable to operate a motor vehicle, you can not use a firearm at Weslaco. You will be asked to leave the range if a Range Safety Officer has any concern about the use of alcohol or drugs.
- When two or more shooters are present on any Weslaco range, one person is to be designated as the Range Safety Officer. It is the Range Safety Officer’s responsibility to enforce all general and range specific rules.
- Reloaded ammunition is permitted on Weslaco ranges as long as safe reloading practices have been followed. Any “reloads” that are loaded beyond factory specifications are strictly prohibited. Any “reloads” that are loaded beyond powder or shell manufacturers suggested ranges of safe operation are strictly prohibited. Tracer, steel core, armor piercing, and black or green tip ammunition are not allowed on Weslaco ranges.
- Unconventional use of a firearm on any Weslaco ranges is strictly prohibited without Weslaco Board of Directors approval.
- Anyone interested in hunting on Weslaco grounds must have successfully passed an approved Ohio Hunter Education Course, and have a copy of their course completion card recorded on a list kept with the club Secretary.
- Park in designated areas only.-
Participating in any event on the Weslaco club grounds or in any Weslaco organized or sponsored event, gives Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club, Inc. permission to use your photo or video images in our printed newsletter, website, social media, or videos. If any member objects to their photo and/or video image used in any Weslaco media, they must submit their objection in writing, including a personal photo, to the Weslaco Board of Directors, club secretary, and club webmaster, via the club post office box. This request will be honored to the best of our ability.- If you are unsure of any safety rule or regulation, you must check with a board member or Weslaco officer before using any Weslaco range.

Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club
Range Specific Rules

In compliance with the State of Ohio ODNR, these Safety Rules have been establishedto ensure the health and safety of those individuals who use or frequent this facility and the community at large. These safety rules supersede and replace any previously adopted safety plan.
Archery Range Specific Rules:
- Appropriate eye protection must be worn when shooting on the Weslaco archery range.
- Any club sponsored event will require the presence of a Range Safety Officer.
- Inspect all equipment for condition and damage before shooting.
- Arrow Check: This includes, but is not limited to, checking arrows and bolts for cracks, loose vanes, bends, broken nocks, or any condition that may cause an arrow or bolt to fly erratically, or to rupture when released.
- Bow Check: This includes, but is not limited to checking for frayed strings, loose pulleys, warped limbs, cracks or other damage that may result in breakage when at full draw.
- Use common sense, if it isn't safe - don't do it; and don't let anybody else do it. Speak up if you see anything unsafe.
- Shoot only those arrows that have been matched to length and weight of the crossbow you are shooting.
- Shoot only those bolts that have been matched to length and weight of the crossbow you are shooting
- Never dry fire a bow. The resistance of the arrow is needed to prevent damage to the bow limbs.
- Never intentionally overdraw a bow.
- Broad head arrows should be used on specific targets only.
- NO incendiary arrows or targets are permitted.- Never carry broad head arrows with the razor tips unsheathed.
-Use proper safety gear, including arm guards to prevent string burns and contusions to the forearm, finger tabs to save fingertips from abrasions, and bow slings to maintain control of the bow.
- Be considerate of fellow archers; distracting behavior or horseplay is prohibited.
- DO NOT nock arrows when persons are down range.
- Nock Arrows ONLY when on the shooting line and with the bow pointed downrange.
- DO NOT elevate or draw the bow pointing above the target butt.
- No person shall go forward of the shooting line until the line is clear and safe.
- Before shooting, be aware of your target and what is beyond before shooting.
- Provided 3D styrofoam targets and/or block targets are the approved targets for the archery range. Check with Range Safety Officer, Officer, or Weslaco Board of Directors member for optional target approval.
Rifle Range Specific Rules:
-Appropriate eye and ear protection is required on all Weslaco firearm shooting ranges. No exceptions.
- Before using this range you MUST post the appropriate “Range in Use” Rifle sign as well as both safety flags, one outside the clubhouse and one at the rifle range.
- Targets are to be placed on the target stands, or put within 5 feet of the front of the back stop on a portable stand. No targets are to be placed farther than 5 feet from the front of the backstop for any reason. No ground level targets will be permitted.
- Tracer, explosive, glass, clay targets, bowling pins, aerosol cans, or incendiary ammunition or targets are strictly prohibited.
- No magazine (mag) dumping allowed. Mag dumping is defined as: To fire a rifle, pistol or shotgun as fast as possible until all ammunition in the magazine has been expended. Mag dumping and shooting fast for training/practice should not be confused. Check with a range officer or Pistol/Rifle Committee chairperson for clarification if needed.
-Any rifle or pistol caliber up to and including 50 caliber is permitted. Any non hunting caliber over 50 caliber will require board approval.
- Pistol use on the rifle range is limited to a maximum of 25 yards back from fixed main target holder.Any club sponsored event will require the presence of a Range Safety Officer.
- Keep your finger off the trigger, and outside the trigger guard, until you are ready to fire, or until the commence fire command is given by the Range Safety Officer.
- No full auto, or bump fire activated firearms are permitted on the rifle range. No rapid fire that could be construed as fully automatic fire is permitted.
Approved usage of rifle range:
- Personal protection, law enforcement, CCW, and competition training are allowed on the rifle range. These forms of practice on the rifle range are permissible as long as the fired shots can not be interpreted as fully automatic fire. Controlled and skillfully aimed shots are preferred. A suggested pause of 3 seconds is preferred between double taps. It is also suggested that you alternate between slow fire and faster training fire magazines. Remember the neighbors.
- Always, keep your firearm unloaded and in a safe condition, until ready to use.
- When loading, ALWAYS keep your firearm pointed in a safe, downrange position.
- Shooting a firearm from an unstable position, or “trick” shooting is prohibited.
- ALWAYS obey ALL range commands IMMEDIATELY.
- Do NOT shoot the backstop framing.
-ALWAYS shoot in the direction of the backstop. Never shoot at an acute angle or backwards.- Please clean up ALL brass when you are done shooting.
- If parking is allowed on or near the rifle range, be considerate of the ground. If it is too wet during the spring or fall, only park in the parking lot and walk to the rifle range.
- The lead in our ammunition is dangerous to your health. Properly wash your hands before eating or using the restroom. It is strongly suggested that women that are pregnant refrain from using the firearm ranges due to lead exposure.
- Before shooting, be aware of your target and what is beyond. Always think safety.
- Use of a legally acquired suppressor shall be declared permissible on Weslaco ranges only if said owner of the device has his/her valid class three paper work and stamp in their possession at time of use, proving the legal ownership.
Trap Field Specific Rules:
- Appropriate eye and ear protection is required on all Weslaco firearm shooting ranges. No exceptions.
-Any club sponsored event will require the presence of a Range Safety Officer.
- Before using either of the trap fields, you MUST post the red flag by the corner of the trap field and the appropriate Trap Field sign.
- Tracer, explosive, or incendiary ammunition is strictly prohibited.
- Explosive, glass, bowling pins, aerosol cans, or incendiary targets are strictly prohibited.
- Shooting a firearm from an unstable position, or “trick” shooting is prohibited.
- Do NOT shoot the trap house for any reason.
-ALWAYS obey ALL range commands IMMEDIATELY.
- Always, keep your firearm unloaded and in a safe condition, until ready to use.
-If anyone is downrange/in the trap house, ALL firearms MUST be unloaded and made safe.
- Anyone loading the trap house will put a safety cone on top of the trap house to show that they are downrange.
- The “unload and change” command means to unload your firearm, make it safe, THEN change stations.
-The lead in our ammunition is dangerous to your health. Properly wash your hands before eating or using the restroom. It is strongly suggested that women that are pregnant refrain from using the firearm ranges due to lead exposure.
- In the event of a misfire, keep the muzzle pointed downrange, open the breech, and ensure the barrel is clear before reloading the firearm.
Skeet / 5 Stand Specific Rules:
- Appropriate eye and ear protection is required on all Weslaco firearm shooting ranges. No exceptions.
- Any club sponsored event will require the presence of a Range Safety Officer.
- Before using either of the Skeet or 5 Stand fields, you must post the red flag by the corner of the trap field and the appropriate Skeet / 5 Stand Field sign.
- Tracer, explosive, or incendiary ammunition is strictly prohibited.
- Explosive, glass, bowling pins, aerosol cans, or incendiary targets are strictly prohibited.
-Keep your finger off the trigger, and outside the trigger guard, until you are ready to fire, or until the commence fire command is given by the Range Safety Officer.
- Shooting a firearm from an unstable position, or “trick” shooting is prohibited.
- ALWAYS obey ALL range commands IMMEDIATELY.
- Only load ONE shell at a time at Skeet station 8.
- Always, keep your firearm unloaded and in a safe condition, until ready to use.
- If anyone is downrange/in the trap house, ALL firearms must be unloaded and made safe.- While shooting 5 stand, only load your firearm after it has been placed over the “shelf” at your station.
- The “unload and change” command means to unload your firearm, make it safe, THEN change stations.
- The lead in our ammunition is dangerous to your health. Properly wash your hands before eating or using the restroom. It is strongly suggested that women that are pregnant refrain from using the firearm ranges due to lead exposure.
- In the event of a misfire, keep the muzzle pointed downrange, open the breech, and ensure the barrel is clear before reloading the firearm.
Walking Course Sporting Clays Specific Rules:
- Appropriate eye and ear protection is required on all Weslaco firearm shooting ranges. No exceptions.
- Any club sponsored event will require the presence of a Range Officer.
- You must obey all commands from the trapper, Range Safety Officer or scorekeeper immediately.
- Tracer, explosive, or incendiary ammunition is strictly prohibited.
- Explosive, glass, bowling pins, aerosol cans, or incendiary targets are strictly prohibited.
- Shooting a firearm from an unstable position, or “trick” shooting is prohibited.
-Keep your finger off the trigger, and outside the trigger guard, until you are ready to fire, or until the commence fire command is given by the Range Safety Officer.
- Always, keep your firearm unloaded and in a safe condition, until you are in a safe position and ready to shoot.
- While walking between shooting positions, all firearms will be unloaded and made safe with actions open. Muzzles will be carried in a safe manner.
-Keep aware of the other shooting stations and their participants at all times.
- The lead in our ammunition is dangerous to your health. Properly wash your hands before eating or using the restroom. It is strongly suggested that women that are pregnant refrain from using the firearm ranges due to lead exposure.
- In the event of a misfire, keep the muzzle pointed downrange, open the breech, and ensure the barrel is clear before reloading the firearm.
Pistol and Small Bore Rifle Range Specific Rules:
- Appropriate eye and ear protection is required on all Weslaco firearm shooting ranges. No exceptions.
- Before using this range you MUST post the appropriate “Range in Use” Pistol sign as well as both safety flags, one outside the clubhouse and one at the pistol range.
- Tracer, explosive, or incendiary ammunition is strictly prohibited.
- Caliber restrictions: Rifle: Maximum .22 rimfire caliber or maximum 9mm Rifle caliber. Pistol: Any recognized traditional pistol specific caliber with a maximum velocity of 1600 feet per second is allowed up to and including 44 Mag or 45 Long Colt caliber. No pistols shooting traditional rifle ammunition will be permitted (ie 45-70 etc.). Black powder: Any conventional black powder pistol caliber is allowed in a pistol at this range.
- If your firearm shoots a shotgun shell of any gauge, you are not allowed to shoot a shotgun shell with it on the pistol range.
- Any club sponsored event will require the presence of a Range Safety Officer.
-When multiple shooters are using the range one person must be specifically identified as the Range Officer.
- Explosive, glass, clay targets, bowling pins, aerosol cans, or incendiary targets are strictly prohibited.
- The top of any target frame being used must not exceed 40” from ground level.
- No full auto, or bump fire activated firearms are permitted on the pistol range.
- No rapid fire that could be construed as fully automatic fire is permitted.
- Approved usage of pistol range:
- Personal protection, law enforcement, CCW, and competition training are allowed on the pistol range. - Keep your finger off the trigger, and outside the trigger guard, until you are ready to fire, or until the commence fire command is given by the Range Safety Officer.
- Always, keep your firearm unloaded and in a safe condition, until ready to use.
- When loading, ALWAYS keep your firearm pointed in a safe, downrange position.
- The lead in our ammunition is dangerous to your health. Properly wash your hands before eating or using the restroom. It is strongly suggested that women that are pregnant refrain from using the firearm ranges due to lead exposure.

- When you have completed your shooting session, put the target stands inside the shooting stalls.
- When done shooting, please repaint the steel targets with the supplied approved paint in the pistol pavilion.
- Drop all dud ammunition in the dud box.
Manual Hand Trap Specific Rules:
- Appropriate eye and ear protection is required on all Weslaco firearm shooting ranges. No exceptions.
- Before using the hand trap, the red flag by trap field #1 must be displayed along with the “Trap” sign below.
- It is permitted to use any unbroken clay targets found on Weslaco grounds in the manual hand traps.
- Only clay targets can be launched from the manual hand traps.
- Shooters using the manual hand traps must be absolutely certain that nobody is on the rifle range or dog training area BEFORE using the manual hand traps.
- Because the manual hand trap can be moved around and rotated, it must only be aimed so that the clays go in the direction away from the driveway and clubhouse.
- Shooters MUST stand behind a line through the manual hand trap.
- Spectator MUST stand at least 5 feet BEHIND the manual hand trap.
- The hand trap puller MUST stand behind the manual hand trap in a location to safely activate the trap
- Using the manual hand trap alone is allowed, but not recommended.
- The shooter, puller, and the spectators, MUST use proper ear protection.
- The shooter and puller, MUST use proper eye protection.
Shotgun Pattern Board Specific Rules:
- Appropriate ear and eye protection must be worn by all shooters using the pattern board.
- The shotgun pattern board is for shotgun use ONLY.
- Use only lead shot on the pattern board, as steel may come back and “pepper” you causing injury. No Duck or Geese loads are to be used on the pattern board.
- Paper, cardboard or thin plastic “patterns” are only to be used on the shotgun pattern board.
- Please clean up all “patterns”, tape, or shells that are used at the shotgun pattern board.
- Be aware of what is behind the pattern board before shooting.
- Do NOT use the shotgun pattern board if the trap fields, skeet fields, or rifle range are in use are in use.
- Do NOT use the shotgun pattern board if there is a hunt going on the Weslaco grounds.
Pheasant Program Specific Rules:
- Appropriate ear and eye protection must be worn by all hunters.
- All hunters must wear a blaze orange hat and vest
- Any Weslaco member interested in hunting on Weslaco grounds must have successfully passed an approved Ohio Hunter Education Safety Course, and have a copy of their course completion card recorded on a list kept with the club Secretary.
- Only hunters signed up, paid for and have attended the Weslaco safety orientation are permitted to hunt pheasants on Weslaco property
- All hunters must display their pheasant badge on their orange hat while hunting pheasant
- Youth hunters must be accompanied by an adult as described in division of wildlife regulations. It is the responsibility of the supervising adult to become familiar with the details of that section since they will be responsible for the actions of the youth hunter.
- There will be no small game hunting on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
- Only those hunters scheduled to hunt will be permitted.
- There will be no hunting of small game, or running or working of dogs during the pheasant program from Oct. to Dec. for more details contact the program director.
-Practice safe gun handling and hunting guidelines at all times. No hunting or discharging of firearms in or around posted areas, clubhouse and parking lot.
-Please observe the courtesy zones around the perimeter of the property. Shooting should be directed to the interior of the property.
- No "ground shooting" of game.
- All hunters will be informed of all regulations pertaining to the Pheasant Program by the Chairman. This will include, times and length for releases and hunts, field use and their boundaries, no shooting zones, bird care, club house housekeeping, and proper dog handling.
- Hunting guests can be family only (ie...son, daughter, wife or parents). All
hunting guests using the Weslaco grounds must have successfully passed an approved Ohio Hunter Education Safety course, and the Weslaco safety orientation.
- All hunters must have their course completion card recorded on a list kept with the club secretary, prior to them hunting at Weslaco.
- A non-family guest hunter will be allowed one per hunt booked. Guest must pay for their own birds. Only one guest per group.
- Members must accompany their guest at all times.
- All bird cleaning must be performed in the designated areas only and discarded in the designated manner.
- No hunting beyond Weslaco property lines.
- No loaded firearms are permitted inside any and all buildings on Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club property.
- No work hours for bird releases each group is responsible for releasing their birds and each hunter must assist during releases.
- If a hunter arrives late for his hunt he must wait in the club house for one hour after the designated start time. He may then proceed to his designate and begin hunting.
- Youths must be properly supervised by a parent or guardian at all times while hunting on Weslaco property.- Daily bag limits: 2 pheasants, 2 chukars, will be enforced for clean up hunts only.
- Hunters must remain in their designated zone for a minimum of one hour before they are free to move on to another area. Please be courteous when entering another area. If the originally assigned group is still hunting their designated zone DO NOT ENTER that area .
- Hunters, who are club members, walking on to, or driving an A.T.V. or U.T.V. to the property from adjoining home subdivisions must sign in at the club house before beginning their hunt.
- Hunters with dogs must have their dogs on a lead on their way to their designated release areas and in the parking lots as a courtesy to other hunters. Aggressive dogs will not be tolerated.
- Please make an extra effort to straighten and sweep the clubhouse before you leave.
- These rules will apply in addition to the State of Ohio Hunting Regulations.

Administrative Rules & Regulations

In compliance with the State of Ohio ODNR, these Safety Rules have been established to ensure the health and safety of those individuals who use or frequent this facility and the community at large.These safety rules supersede and replace any previously adopted safety plan.
- The designated Range Safety Officer has complete and total authority to carry out the rules and regulations set forth by the Weslaco Board of Directors and it’s committees, and may enforce them by barring an individual or individuals from any Weslaco activity until reviewed by the Weslaco Board of Directors.
- A designated Range Safety Safety Officer must be present at all organized shoots. If needed, the Range Officer can be selected from the shooting participants before the event begins.
- Unbroken used clay targets are the property of Weslaco and should not be removed from the club grounds. Unbroken used clay targets may be used in the manual hand traps, but not in the automatic traps.
- All guests, regardless of age, must be under complete supervision at all times by their accompanying Weslaco member.
- Club members and their guest must sign the club log books inside the main clubhouse before using any range. Please remember to sign out when leaving Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club property.
- Guests are permitted to use any Weslaco range only when accompanied by a Weslaco member. Family members are considered guests.
- All shooting, except during the regular hunting seasons, must be confined to the Weslaco ranges. Any exceptions, must be approved by the Weslaco Board of Directors.
- When the trap, skeet, or sporting clays/5 stand ranges are in use, rifle range use is prohibited.- Range hours of operation: Monday through Saturday, 10:00 A.M. to 10:00 P.M.. Sunday 12:00 Noon to 10:00 P.M.
- Each range has equal priority, except during scheduled shoots.

Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club Exceptions to These Rules & Regulations

In compliance with the State of Ohio ODNR, these Safety Rules have been established to ensure the health and safety of those individuals who use or frequent this facility and the community at large.These safety rules supersede and replace any previously adopted safety plan.
- The Weslaco Board of Directors has the right to allow the unconventional use of firearms relating to hosting a professional exhibition shooter on the club grounds.
- No alcohol is permitted on Weslaco club grounds during any shooting event. With Weslaco Board of Directors approval only, alcoholic beverages would be permitted at any non shooting social event, as long as all firearms are safely locked in vehicles. This restriction includes camping and fishing.

Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club Rules & Regulations Violations

In compliance with the State of Ohio ODNR, these Safety Rules have been established to ensure the health and safety of those individuals who use or frequent this facility and the community at large. These safety rules supersede and replace any previously adopted safety plan.
- These rules and regulations apply to all Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club ranges.
-The Board of Directors and Officers of The Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club Inc., have the authority to enforce and carry out the penalties set forth in this safety plan.
- The penalties set forth below apply to anyone on the Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club grounds, member or guest, that violates the rules of this safety plan, the laws of the State of Ohio, or the United States of America.
- The penalties set forth below apply to anyone on the club grounds, member or guest, that witnesses a violation of Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club rules and regulations, the laws of the State of Ohio, or the United States of America, and fails to report the violation to the Weslaco Board of Directors or Officers.
- Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club Rules and Regulations Violations Penalties:
- First infraction: Verbal warning plus corrective instruction from the Range Safety Officer, Club Officer, or Weslaco Board of Directors member.
- Second infraction: Shooter will be told by the Range Officer to cease all shooting activities for the day and make their firearm safe. The Range Safety Officer will give a written warning to the shooter, with a copy going to the Weslaco Board of Directors for review. ALL range privileges are suspended until the incident disposition has been resolved by the Weslaco Board of Directors. The shooter will have to present him/herself at the next scheduled Weslaco Board of Directors meeting for discussion and review.
- Ultimate penalties can be: Expulsion or suspension from the Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club. Prosecution to the full extent of the existing laws of the State of Ohio. Financial restitution for damages to the property of Weslaco Sportsmen’s Club, Inc., or other members and guests.
